The Department of Justice has the mandate to support the dual roles of the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada. The Department of Justice fulfills three distinctive roles within the Government of Canada. It acts as: a policy department with responsibilities to oversee matters relating to the administration of justice within the federal domain, a provider of various legal services to government, and a central agency responsible for supporting the Minister in advising Cabinet.
