Common Questions

My parents are separating. What about my concerns?

Last reviewed in May 2022 by the Clicklaw Editors

Have your parents recently separated? Are they getting a divorce? Or are you worried that it's going to happen soon?

Good starting points include:

  • A Kids' Guide to Separation and Divorce, from the provincial government and the Justice Education Society of BC, is for children aged 5 to 12. It is an interactive, animated guide that looks at parents splitting up from the child's point of view.
  • A Teen Guide to Parental Separation and Divorce, from the provincial government and the Justice Education Society of BC, looks at parental separation or divorce from the point of view of preteens and teens.
  • Legal Rights for Youth, from the Justice Education Society of BC, provides some information about separation and divorce for children, including if a child can decide who they will live with. Go to "Family Break-up."

Need more help?

  • Child and Youth Legal Centre, from the Society for Children and Youth of BC, provides legal help for young people who are experiencing problems relating to family law and many others. Call 778-657-5544 or 1-877-462-0037 (toll-free).
  • If you are a child or youth and would like to talk to someone call the Helpline for Children, at 310-1234, for free from anywhere in British Columbia (you don’t need to dial an area code).
  • Call the Kids Help Phone for free from anywhere in Canada, at 1-800-668-6868. Their counsellors provide counselling, referrals, and information to young people in Canada.
